Mt. Baker Moto Sports’ story began in 2002 when it was acquired from Steve Baker, the first American world road racing champion. Since then, the dealership has undergone significant changes, including relocation and expansion. A pivotal moment came in 2018 when long-time employee Bret Dodd took the helm as owner, initiating a new chapter of growth and customer-centric service.
Stephen Woodward, the Sales and Finance Manager, joined the team in November 2004. His vast experience, including a background in the Alaskan powersports market, has played a crucial role in steering the dealership’s trajectory.
Mt. Baker Moto Sports prides itself on offering a wide range of brands and products. As Stephen explains, “We have all three of the KTM brands – KTM, GasGas, and Husqvarna. We’re also a significant Kawasaki dealer and have found great success with CF Moto.” This diverse lineup allows the dealership to cater to various customer preferences and needs.
The dealership’s strong performance in off-road and motocross segments reflects the team’s personal interests and expertise. “We’re all dirt bikers,” Stephen notes, highlighting the staff’s deep connection to the products they sell.
Mt. Baker Moto Sports is deeply integrated into the local powersports community. The dealership provides substantial support to the Mount Baker Motorcycle Club and its Hannagan Speedway. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Thursday night motocross at the track, a milestone that underscores the dealership’s long-standing commitment to the sport and its enthusiasts.
Bret Dodd, the owner, serves as the president of the Mount Baker Motorcycle Club, further solidifying the dealership’s ties to the local riding community.
Like many in the industry, Mt. Baker Moto Sports has faced its share of challenges, from inventory fluctuations to staffing issues. However, the dealership’s experienced team has navigated these obstacles with resilience and adaptability.
Stephen highlights the dealership’s focus on maintaining strong customer satisfaction scores and competitive pricing. “We charge the rate that the manufacturers charge us… we don’t try to charge a bunch of extra freight,” he explains, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and fair pricing.
As Mt. Baker Moto Sports moves forward, the team is actively adapting to the evolving landscape of the powersports industry. They’re exploring new marketing strategies and leveraging emerging technologies to enhance their operations and customer outreach.
Stephen recognizes the shifting dynamics in customer communication, noting an increasing preference for text-based interactions. “It seems like texting is the preferred method for a lot of people,” he observes, highlighting the dealership’s efforts to adapt to these changing preferences while maintaining their commitment to personalized service.
With their strong foundation, diverse product offerings, and deep community ties, Mt. Baker Moto Sports is well-equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the dynamic powersports market.
