Founded in 1984 as Clive Small Engine, the business took on new life when John Agan’s and his brother Chuck purchased it in April 1996. “We wanted to get away from corporate America and find something we could build together,” John reflects. “Neither of us had industry experience, but we knew that if we offered a good product, were fair with pricing, and backed everything with great service, we’d find success.”
And success they did find. Under John and Chuck’s leadership, the dealership grew to four times its original size, becoming one of the largest independent power equipment dealers in Iowa. John took charge of sales while Chuck managed parts and service, with both brothers bringing a hands-on approach and a commitment to integrity. “We just worked hard every day, took care of our customers, and built a great team,” John says.
Chuck retired from the business five years ago, passing the baton to Mike Duncan, who partnered with John to continue the Clive Power Equipment legacy. Mike has been a fantastic partner, as both of them bring different skills to the table, but their values align in putting customers first and maintaining a strong, dedicated team.
Today, Clive Power Equipment operates out of a 17,000-square-foot facility that includes a showroom, parts, and service departments, and an expansive storage area. The business runs smoothly with 14 dedicated employees, including a team of cross-trained technicians and experienced sales and service staff. “We’re a tight-knit group that enjoys working together,” John adds. “We have fun, which makes it a great place to work and a place where our customers feel welcome.”
Clive Power Equipment is not just about sales; it’s about service, too. The dealership prioritizes commercial customers, ensuring their equipment is worked on within two to four hours. “Our philosophy isn’t that the customer is always right, but that the customer is always the customer,” John explains. “We do everything we can to meet their needs, whether that’s helping them find the right product or getting their equipment back up and running as quickly as possible.”
The company’s dedication to community involvement extends to a variety of initiatives aimed at making a positive impact on Clive and its residents. In addition to supporting local high schools, elementary schools, and community events, the company actively seeks out opportunities to contribute to the overall well-being of the area. This includes participating in volunteer programs, organizing educational workshops, and collaborating with local organizations to address pressing community needs. John emphasized, “By engaging in these efforts, we strive to foster a culture of giving back and creating lasting, meaningful connections with the people and organizations that make Clive such a special place.”
Despite changes in the industry and challenges in maintaining margins, Clive Power Equipment remains committed to its core values. “We’ve always been focused on profitability, but never at the cost of service or quality,” John emphasizes. “You have to be profitable to stay in business, and there’s no reason to apologize for that. It’s about finding the balance where you can offer good products, provide great service, and take care of your employees.”
