Best August Tips for Your Dealership’s P&A Business

August is the time to prepare your P&A department for the next selling season by improving inventory productivity, refreshing displays, creating seasonal product packages, and training your team on key product conversations. Small, focused changes, combined with tracking sell-through by category, can help reduce aging inventory, increase sales opportunities, and strengthen year-end performance.

August is one of those months when it is easy to stay focused on today’s customers and forget that the next selling season is already around the corner.

Your Parts, Accessories and Apparel department does not need a complete overhaul. A few focused changes now can improve sales, clean up inventory and help your team finish the year stronger.

1. Look at What You Already Own

Before placing another order, take a walk through the showroom and back-stock area.

What is selling? What has been sitting too long? What products are taking up valuable space without getting attention?

Sometimes the opportunity is already in the building. It may simply need a better location, a stronger display or a staff member who knows how to talk about it.

2. Start the Seasonal Transition Early

Do not wait until the weather changes to bring out fall and winter products.

Begin making room for:

  • Cold-weather and rain gear
  • Hunting and utility accessories
  • Heated products
  • Maintenance and storage supplies
  • Holiday gifts and stocking stuffers

You do not have to remove all your summer merchandise at once. Start blending in the products customers will need next.

3. Create Easy Product Packages

Customers do not always know everything they need, so make the buying decision easier.

Create a fall riding package, hunting-season package, winter storage package or cold-weather apparel package.

Packages help your staff start conversations and can increase the number of items included in each sale.

4. Refresh One Important Display

You do not need to redo the entire showroom.

Choose one wall, endcap or floor display that is not performing and give it a clear purpose. Make sure it is easy to shop, properly signed and filled with products that belong together.

A small, well-planned display can often outperform a large area filled with unrelated merchandise.

5. Give Your Staff Something to Talk About

Choose one product category each week and spend 10 minutes reviewing it with the team.

Talk about who the product is for, what problem it solves and what other items should be recommended with it.

Be mindful that your employees do not need a complicated sales script. They need confidence, product knowledge and a few natural questions they can ask customers.

6. Watch Sell-Through by Category

A useful August KPI is the sell-through rate by category.

The formula is:

Units sold ÷ units available for sale × 100

This helps you see which categories are moving and which ones may need better placement, stronger staff involvement or a promotional plan.

Do not wait until the season is over to discover that you still own most of the inventory.

Your August Action Item

Choose one seasonal category and focus on it for the next 30 days.

Review the inventory, refresh the display, create one product package, train the team and track the category’s sell-through each week.

Keep it simple and talk about the results during your staff meetings.

August is not only about finishing the summer season. It is your opportunity to prepare the showroom, the inventory and the team for what comes next.
